What is pedestrian recall?
A traffic signal timing function that causes a pedestrian walk phase to activate automatically every cycle. In other words, a beg button is not necessary.
I propose implementing pedestrian recall for a well travelled intersection on Port Republic Rd and Hillside Ave/Bluestone Dr.
Why?
- It is a well travelled crossing situated on top of the bluestone trail
- For a variety of reasons, the beg button may not have been hit
- Not implementing pedestrian recall results in 2 scenarios:
- For those familiar with the crossing: They are incentivized to jaywalk to save time which comes with risks
- For those not familiar: Time is wasted waiting for a full length cycle before having the opportunity to cross
- The perpendicular pedestrian crossings use pedestrian recall already. (This is due to them not interfering with the majority of traffic which is North/South bound.)
- TODO: Implementing it would cause a (-) second delay over the (-) second traffic cycle compared to (-) which is a daily motorist delay of (-).
